The PIC24F “KM” family provides a new level of integrated analog functionality, including a 12-bit A/D converter with threshold detection, 8-bit D/A converters for analog control loops and precision comparator references, and operational amplifiers to amplify sensor signals. The PIC24 “KM” microcontrollers are the first to incorporate the new MCCP (Multiple-output Capture Compare PWM Module) and SCCP (Single-output Capture Compare PWM Module) peripherals, which integrate timers and advanced PWM control for motor, power supply, and lighting applications. The MCCP and SCCP modules combine timers, input capture, output comparison, and PWM functions into a single timebase for enhanced flexibility. These modules support 16/32-bit timers and can operate with a high-speed clock to increase resolution through asynchronous operation. They also enable automatic sleep mode to optimize power consumption.
This is also the first PIC24 family to offer a Configurable Logic Cell (CLC) for enhanced integrated peripheral interconnection. The CLC module facilitates the creation of custom, real-time logic functions on the chip and is supported by the CLC configuration tool, which helps programmers code the circuit graphically instead of using assembly or C, saving them time.
In addition to integrating advanced peripherals, the “KM” family includes support for 3V and 5V applications. Many customers prefer 3V operation in battery-powered portable applications, and all 3V “KM” products incorporate eXtreme Low Power XLP to optimize battery life. Other customers prefer 5V with the PIC24FV16KM product versions for applications where higher dynamic range, noise immunity, and robustness are critical factors. The PIC24F “KM” with its extremely low power consumption and advanced analog integration is an excellent solution for customers working on cost-sensitive applications such as flow meters, smoke detectors, brushless DC and stepper motors, LED dimming, battery charging, environmental sensors, and disposable wearable medical devices.
Customers can begin development with 3V PIC24F “KM” microcontrollers using the Microstick for the 3V PIC24F “K” Series (DM240013-1), priced at $34.95. Customers who wish to develop with 5V PIC24F “KM” microcontrollers can purchase the Microstick for the 5V PIC24F “K” Series (DM240013-2) priced at $29.95. Both Microsticks are USB-powered and have an integrated debugger/programmer, eliminating the need for an external programmer. They also include a DUT (Device-Under-Test) socket for easy device swapping and can be connected to a prototyping board. These Microsticks are supported by Microchip's free MPLAB® X IDE (Integrated Development Environment) and are compatible with 3V and 5V PIC24F “K” series microcontrollers in 28-pin SPDIP packages. From now until September 2013, the Microstick for the 5V PIC24F “K” series (DM240013-2) is available at a special introductory price of $19.99.
PIC24F “KM” microcontrollers operate between 1.8 and 3.6V, while the PIC24FV “KM” versions operate between 2 and 5.5V. The PIC24F(V)16KM204, PIC24F(V)08KM204, and PIC24F(V)16KM104 models are available in 44-pin TQFP and QFN packages, as well as 48-pin UQFN packages. The PIC24F(V)16KM202, PIC24F(V)08KM202, PIC24F(V)16KM102, and PIC24F(V)08KM102 models are available in 28-pin SOIC, SSOP, SPDIP, and QFN packages. The PIC24F(V)08KM101 is available in 20-pin SOIC, SPDIP, and SSOP packages.
