Renesas Electronics expands its Renesas Synergy™ platform for IoT
Renesas Electronics announces the expansion of its Renesas Synergy™ platform designed to accelerate time to market, reduce total cost of ownership, and eliminate many of the obstacles engineers face when designing devices for the Internet of Things (IoT).
The expansion includes the launch of the new Synergy S124 microcontroller family, featuring ultra-low power operation and precise analog signal generation/acquisition, ideal for sensor applications. Supporting these new MCUs is an updated version of the Synergy Software Package (SSP) and the e² Studio tool, the solution's integrated development environment (ISDE). The SSP and e² Studio also incorporate new enhancements across the entire Synergy platform, adding new capabilities for networking, industrial automation, power management, and automatic configuration to save even more valuable time for embedded system developers.
The Synergy microcontrollers in the S124 Group are based on Renesas' proprietary ultra-low power technology, consuming only 70.3 µA per MHz of MCU clock speed for extended battery life in low-power and battery-powered portable applications. These MCUs integrate advanced analog signaling capabilities with 14-bit analog-to-digital converters, 12-bit digital-to-analog converters, and low-power comparators. User interface applications support more than 30 channels of capacitive touch sensor inputs. Connectivity is expanded through USB-FS and CAN interfaces, and security is enhanced with on-chip support for SRAM check pairing, a NIST-compliant TRNG (True Random Number Generator), and AES-256 encryption with chaining. The MCU packages measure 4 mm x 4 mm for space-constrained end products. Typical applications include smart IoT sensors, appliance control, and point-of-sale terminals.
Development support for the new Synergy S124 group and the DK-S124 development kit is provided in version 1.1.0 of the SSP and e² studio version 5.0. The v1.1.0 SSP has specific optimizations for the ThreadX® real-time operating system and the USBX™ communication stack to work efficiently within the smaller memory sizes of the S124 MCUs.
SSP v1.1.0 also includes enhancements for IPv6 networking and services for connected devices, BSD-compliant connector layer support, support for audio SSI and CAN communications, plus several additions to the application framework.
e² studio v5.0 is built on the latest Eclipse v4.5 update (Mars release) and includes many new features to improve automated guidance for starting new Synergy platform projects, such as presenting all the basic components of a project in a graphical stack representation for workflow simplification and providing complete visibility of total memory usage.
