With a power supply ranging from 1.8 V to 5.5 V, the RX230 series is ideal for applications requiring high processing performance in environments with low current capacity, a key requirement in various industrial and consumer applications, as well as the robustness needed in household appliance applications.

Compared to the existing RX231 series, the RX230 is optimized with respect to the size and function of its onboard flash memory. This meets the requirements of cost-sensitive industrial and consumer applications that do not require USB or CAN interfaces in their application design and need 256 kB of flash memory or less for their code, with a maximum of 32 kB of onboard RAM.

The RX230 series can handle heavy processing loads, such as digital signal noise reduction and floating-point calculations, using the Renesas RXv2 32-bit CPU core with FPU/DSP capabilities. As a result, system power consumption is reduced not only by applying Renesas' latest process technologies, but also by lowering the CPU frequency while simultaneously increasing processing speed. The RXv2 CPU core, as implemented in the RX230, achieves a performance benchmark score of 4.16 CoreMark/MHz. Furthermore, the RX230 achieves first-class standby power efficiency at only 0.8 μA, enabling system builders to extend system operation using battery power.

Key features of the RX230 MCU series:
 1) Excellent energy efficiency through the optimized combination of low power consumption and high performance:
The RXv2 CPU core achieves a performance benchmark score of 4.16 CoreMark/MHz, combined with a clock speed of 54 MHz, as well as approximately a fourfold increase in DSP performance and a sixfold increase in FPU performance. As a result, the new MCU significantly reduces the time required for processing-intensive tasks, such as digital filtering.

The RX230 range achieves a low power consumption of only 0.8 µA in standby mode, while preserving the contents of both the SRAM and CPU registers. The RX230 range can recover from standby mode in as little as 5.5 µs, reducing current loss during recovery and allowing the application to react quickly to external events. Applications can be run from flash memory after this interval, and analog functions, such as the analog-to-digital converter, are available for use.

The RX230 range also supports an additional low-power timer (LPT), which consumes only an additional 0.4 µA and allows the system manufacturer to program the device to wake up from low-power modes with a wide range of possible times, minimizing current consumption in many applications.

2) High-Sensitivity Touch Functionality:
The RX230 series provides proven capacitive touch sensor capabilities equipped with Renesas' second-generation capacitive touch technology.
Up to 24 touch keys in a 100-pin package and 6 touch keys in a 48-pin package are supported for self-capacitance operation. Using mutual capacitance mode, the RX230 MCU can support up to 64 keys, combining high sensitivity with a high level of noise tolerance. The RX230 detects touches even when the panel is wet or when the operator is wearing gloves, creating highly flexible user interfaces in terms of operating environments and device design.

3) Safe Design:
Compliance with international safety standards is important in industrial automation, household appliances, and electrical control applications. The RX230 MCU offers extensive hardware-based safety features compliant with UL and IEC60730, including self-diagnostics and disconnect detection monitoring for the on-chip A/D converter; a precision clock frequency measurement circuit; an independent watchdog timer; and built-in hardware memory testing to detect anomalies in the internal RAM.

Designed for ruggedness
, the RX230 range allows operation from a single power supply from 1.8V to 5.5V, enabling system builders to design robust applications and minimizing their concerns about signal-to-noise ratio. Furthermore, the RX230 offers not only operation but also flash memory reprogramming and erasing across the entire supply voltage range, ensuring easy and cost-effective application design. Therefore, the highly scalable power supply concept ensures that the RX230 is an ideal complement to the requirements of both household appliances and industrial applications.
