The RH850/V1R-M, the first product in the RH850/V1R series, includes a digital signal processor (DSP) and high-speed serial interfaces, and is specifically designed for medium- and long-range radar applications.
Software and tools, including evaluation boards, will also be available to enable system developers to begin development immediately with the RH850/V1R-M solution.
With the expansion of ADAS and autonomous driving, sensors are rapidly becoming a key technology. Vehicles are currently equipped with a wide range of sensors, such as cameras, lidar, and ultrasonic sensors. In particular, radar sensors are essential for ADAS applications, including advanced emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, because, unlike other sensors, radar sensors are not negatively affected by external environmental limitations, including adverse weather conditions such as rain, fog, and low light.
Furthermore, high-precision detection is becoming critical for the future of autonomous driving to meet the growing demands for distance resolution, object separation, and speed measurement accuracy. This requires a greater number of antennas and increased signal processing performance.
To meet these needs, Renesas launched the new RH850/V1R-M MCU series, specifically designed for radar applications in ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). The new microcontroller series features optimized and programmable digital signal processing, a dual-core 320 MHz processor with 2 MB of high-speed flash memory, 2 MB of internal RAM, and meets the industry's highest temperature requirements.
Key features of the RH850/V1R-M MCU series:
1) High-performance DSP with flexible programming to improve radar signal processing performance and increase detection accuracy.
The RH850/V1R-M MCU series is designed to optimize hardware acceleration in the DSP. The optimized DSP allows system developers to efficiently process raw target object data, independent of any relevant classification and security monitoring performed on the CPUs. Renesas' high-performance DSP executes radar-specific algorithms such as Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs), beamforming, windowing, channel calibration, and peak search at high speed and with low power consumption. The DSP offers high programming flexibility, and Renesas has specifically developed a DSP math library for automotive radar sensors to support system designers in their algorithm development.
2) Renesas' low-power technology and embedded flash for more compact and lower-cost radar sensors:
The RH850/V1R-M series has been developed using Renesas' 40-nanometer (nm) embedded flash processing technology (eFlash), which has a proven track record in terms of write cycles, faster random access speeds, and high reliability. It also has the advantage of low power consumption, as the transistors are smaller and reduce parasitic capacitances.
The RH850/V1R-M process specification also meets the highest temperature requirements in the industry (T-junction 150°C).
The onboard flash memory offers advantages to system designers by providing greater integration using less PCB space and improved real-time performance.
3) High-performance 320MHz dual-core, 2MB high-capacity onboard RAM, 2MB higher-speed flash memory, and higher temperature requirements.
The new RH850/V1R-M series features two G3MH CPU cores operating at 320 megahertz (MHz) and are the highest-performing cores in the RH850 family. The G3MH is a superscalar RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) with two 7-stage integer pipelines, allowing the execution of two different instructions simultaneously. Each G3MH core achieves a performance of 3.2 DMIPS/MHz.
With a large 2MB of RAM, the RH850/V1R-M series handles all the specific calculations performed on radar cube data, such as range and velocity FFTs, digital beamforming, CFAR (Constant False Alarm Rate), and spike detection.
Availability:
Samples of the RH850/V1R-M series and the DSP math library will be available starting in the second half of 2017.
