As the demand for miniaturized and highly functional electronics increases, the problem of electromagnetic noise is becoming ever more critical for many industries. Capacitors are often used between the power supply line and ground as a noise mitigation measure, but this method is not without its challenges. A capacitor's noise-canceling effectiveness is optimal when its impedance is minimal. However, the capacitor's impedance can increase due to its equivalent service level (ESL), especially at frequencies above the self-resonant frequency, thus undermining its noise cancellation efficiency. To minimize this impact, it is common practice to connect numerous capacitors in parallel to collectively reduce the impedance, at the expense of the number of components in the bill of materials (BoM) and overall cost.
Murata's Large Capacitor Condenser (LCT) is a revolutionary new concept capable of resolving the long-standing challenge of managing power supply noise and the number of capacitor components. Murata's LCT component is designed to minimize noise within the frequency range of a few MHz to 1 GHz. This is achieved by using negative mutual inductance to reduce the ESL of a noise-reducing capacitor, thereby increasing its operational effectiveness and reducing the number of capacitors required.
Utilizing non-magnetic multilayer ceramic technology in its construction, the LCT ensures stable negative inductance and low DC resistance (maximum 55 mΩ) even under varying current conditions, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, including consumer, industrial, and healthcare products. Murata's LCT advancement is the result of its extensive expertise in multilayer ceramics and redefines power supply noise reduction circuit design, minimizing a significant and persistent electronic design challenge.
Each LCT is suitable for temperatures up to 125°C and, because there is no DC overlap characteristic, can be used with stable negative inductance up to 3 A. The surface-mount device (SMD) measures only 2.0 x 1.25 x 0.95 mm and is available in tape and reel packaging.
“Murata’s new LCT is a true innovation that goes beyond simply improving existing products; it redefines what is considered a standard noise suppression component by radically redefining the entire concept,” said Masamichi Ando, Vice President of the Business Incubation Center at Murata’s Corporate Technology and Business Development Unit. “With this revolutionary component, engineers can reduce the number of components, system complexity, and costs, helping them to further miniaturize their solutions and reduce their environmental impact by decreasing material consumption.”
