Diodes are commonly used in a wide variety of circuits for rectification and protection. Furthermore, since lower power consumption is required in most applications, the adoption of single-band diodes (SBDs), which are more efficient than other diodes, continues to increase. However, if the forward voltage (VF) is reduced to improve efficiency, the inversely related residual current (IR) will increase. This raises the risk of thermal runaway, so it is important to balance both VF and IR when selecting SBDs for circuit design.

To address this need, ROHM has strengthened its SBD range, balancing small size with the low VF and IR characteristics demanded by the automotive sector. The well-established RBR and RBQ series have been expanded to include a range of compact, high-current, high-voltage products that enable rectification and protection in a broader range of applications.

The introduction of a new process allows ROHM to improve the performance of chips in both series by 25% (VF of the RBR series in particular) compared to ROHM's conventional products. Furthermore, the RBR series features excellent low VF characteristics, a key factor in improving efficiency and reducing losses. This makes them ideal for automotive and consumer electronics applications, such as laptops, where high efficiency is required. In fact, 12 of the products adopt a compact package (PMDE package) that reduces the mounting area by 42% compared to existing products (PMDU package).

At the same time, the RBQ series offers excellent low IR characteristics that enable stable operation in high-temperature environments, significantly reducing the risk of thermal runaway, a common problem with SBDs. For this reason, they are ideal for automotive powertrain applications and power supplies for industrial equipment operating in high-temperature environments. Twelve new 100V products have been added to meet the need for higher voltages. Both series are AEC-Q101 rated to ensure automotive-grade reliability.
