The components are used, for example, to attenuate the current in converters used in applications with difficult environmental conditions, including railway vehicles or oil platforms.

The IP66 protection rating allows chokes to be mounted externally to the converters. This mounting method has the advantage that the heat generated by the choke is produced outside, rather than inside, the converter. The lower internal temperature of the converter eliminates the need for fans for heat dissipation, resulting in energy savings. External mounting offers the additional advantage of being able to design converters with smaller dimensions. External mounting also allows the choke itself to be adapted to the ambient temperature expected for the specific application. While, for example, the internal temperatures of converters used in railway applications can reach 70 to 80°C, the external temperature of electronic systems mounted under the chassis can reach, at most, around 40°C.

SMP has developed shock absorbers with protective paint for external mounting, including for applications on offshore oil platforms where solar radiation, seawater, rain, and the presence of chemical gases must be considered. SMP offers the shock absorbers with special mounting fixings to facilitate installation outside the converters. The shock absorber and mounting plate are located outside the unit, while the connecting cables pass through a sealed opening and are located inside the converter.

In addition to IP66-rated components, SMP also offers inductive components designed for specific applications, such as single-conductor inductors, single inductors, modular inductors, and filters. All components comply with RoHS and REACH regulations and are CE and EAC certified. The materials used are UL listed. Nearly 100 percent of products are custom-made – material development and production also take place in SMP's factories and are tailored to customer needs. SMP components are used in industrial applications in power electronics, automation, and signal processing; in transmission engineering applications, including for railway technology, electromobility, and marine engineering; in electromedicine; in renewable energy; in conventional power supply applications; and in the aerospace industry.
