The “know-how” is increasingly located within the software device, therefore manufacturers can now protect their IP with CodeMeter® against reverse engineering and illegal use of the software by signing the application code.
The new CodeMeter Embedded driver replaces the CodeMeter Runtime in Windows CE. This driver is available for Linux, VxWorks, Windows, Android, and QNX, as well as for various ARM, x86, and PowerPC platforms. Depending on the supported platform, the hardware manufacturer can select either Human Interface Device (HID) or Mass Storage mode for USB communication with their CmSticks, the USB dongles where the encryption key and license are stored. CmCard form factors (SD, μSD, CF, CFast memory, and security cards), which are still part of the extensive range of CmDongle hardware devices, utilize the file I/O interface. Furthermore, CodeMeter supports the Secure Disk standard, enabling API-based data reading and writing without requiring device enumeration by the operating system. In VxWorks 7.0, CodeMeter is integrated by default within the core security features. The technology for activating specific functions, licensing, and protection is essentially identical to that which characterizes our CmDongles, whether by hardware keys or (CmActLicense) where the license is linked to a digital fingerprint of the system.
The protection functions that characterize the CodeMeter Embedded controller are vital for connected control systems in Industry 4.0, and very useful within machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) environments.
