Kontron's 5G M.2 IB17M-W module has entered full mass production, offering compatibility with the 3GPP Release 17 standard and data speeds of up to 4.9 Gbps download and 0.55 Gbps upload. Thanks to 4x4 downlink and 2x2 uplink MIMO, the module ensures stable, high-performance connectivity, even in demanding industrial environments.
A global SKU facilitates flexible deployment across multiple regions, simplifying international projects and certification processes. The standardized M.2 3052 (Key B) form factor enables easy integration into existing systems and promotes cost-effective scalability of high-speed cellular connectivity, offering excellent price-performance in its class. Based on the Qualcomm SDX 72-0 platform, the module provides USB 3.1 Gen 2 and PCIe data interfaces. Furthermore, the Dual SIM function ensures maximum flexibility for international use.
The module's compact design, with an extended operating temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C, makes it ideal for industrial applications. Support for GNSS L1+L5 frequencies for GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo enables high-precision positioning without the need for additional antennas. Security is a key design principle for this solution. Regular firmware and security updates ensure long-term protection against emerging threats and vulnerabilities.
With development in Berlin and series production in Düsseldorf, Kontron strengthens its European technological expertise. Manufacturing in Germany guarantees short supply chains, high quality standards, and compliance with stringent safety and regulatory requirements, providing customers with a reliable, future-proof connectivity solution.
“The serial production of our 5G M.2 broadband module underscores Europe’s manufacturing excellence while offering a secure and future-proof solution for industrial connectivity. ‘Industrial 5G Made in Europe’ stands for quality, technological sovereignty, and reliability in critical applications—attributes that are increasingly essential for resilience and cybersecurity in today’s geopolitical environment,” says Hannes Niederhauser, CEO of Kontron AG.
