A key feature of the new Qi2 standard, recently announced by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), is the incorporation of MPP (Magnetic Power Profile) for magnetic alignment between the transmitter and receiver. DSC's flexible power architecture allows combining MPP and Qi 2.0's EPP (Extended Power Profile) with a single controller.

The Qi2 reference design helps minimize customer risk by certifying their final product, which is necessary to pass the Qi certification process. Because it integrates several automotive-grade Microchip devices, the dual charger also meets automotive standards for reliability and safety. The automotive hardware and software solution facilitates in-vehicle integration and offers support for AUTOSAR's AUTOSAR® (AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture) and MCAL (Microcontroller Abstraction Layer Architecture) architectures, as well as functional safety features, among others. A CryptoAuthentication™ integrated circuit provides the necessary security to meet the stringent authentication requirements of the Qi standards.

“The dual reference design provides flexibility and programmability for automotive charger module manufacturers to optimize MPLA (MPP Power Loss Accounting) and Q-FOD (Q-Based Foreign Object Detection) and minimize certification time. It also enables seamless integration into the automotive environment,” said Joe Thomsen, vice president of Microchip’s Digital Signal Controllers business unit. “The automotive design, along with our comprehensive hardware and software portfolio, helps our customers optimize their end solutions and shorten time to market.”

Within the reference design, Microchip can provide design files and software designed to facilitate the design process and ensure success the first time. The design includes the DSC dsPIC33 and a TA100/TA010 Trust Anchor secure storage subsystem supplied by Microchip as a certified manufacturer licensed by the WPC (Wireless Power Consortium).

In addition, the design also includes the ATA6563 CAN transceiver, the MCP14700 and MCP16331 gate drivers, and the MCP1755 regulators, all from Microchip.

Key features:
• Dual transmitter compatible with Qi 2.0
• MPLA and Q-FOD
• Thermal protection and power shutdown
• Transmitter based on fixed frequency topology control to optimize EMI/EMC performance
