In many cases, JoC can replace the electronics of a conventional microcontroller, thus greatly simplifying the design. Typical applications include controllers of all types or sensor evaluations, where all communication interfaces can be easily handled in Java.

Unlike C or C++, Java's memory management approach offers significantly better protection against hidden errors. Built-in features, such as USB interface support in Java, lead to considerably faster development and eliminate the need for time-consuming low-level programming. Convenient development through the full-featured JoC Manager IDE enables a rapid time-to-market strategy. This means that even less experienced developers can successfully launch a product.

The JoC module can be directly integrated into the application hardware. Application development is performed on the JoC Javaino reference board using the JoC Manager. The free downloadable IDE contains a complete Java development environment for editing, compiling, and debugging applications.

Java on a Chip (JoC) simplifies application programming by using a high-level, object-oriented language and a well-designed library for interacting with the hardware environment. The JoC module contains the JoC and the necessary peripherals to provide a ready-to-use solution. Measuring just 24 x 36 mm and mountable via SMT or 2 mm pin headers, it easily fits into even the most compact designs.

The JoC offers a wide range of interface options. These include digital and analog I/O, two RS-232 (TTL) ports, PWM I/O, I2C, SPI, and a keypad interface. A/D and D/A converters are also available, as well as a battery-powered real-time clock. The Javaino board can be further expanded using standard Arduino Shields.

The JoC's USB interface is a special feature that makes working with JoC extremely easy: the compiled Java application is loaded directly onto the chip and runs there. At the same time, the developer can remotely debug the Java application directly on the chip via the same USB interface and access it through the console.

The applications are programmed in JoC Manager, an intuitive IDE based on the latest Windows design. The free JoC Manager includes a complete Java development environment. This allows for convenient Java code editing, compilation, and remote debugging. Otherwise, the included features are typically only found in expensive, high-end IDEs.

Common features, such as breakpoints and variable inspection, are built into the debugger. No additional hardware or software is required. The entire development and debugging environment is set up in just a few minutes by simply installing JoC Manager.
