“Compared to RS232, I²C-based touch systems operate at a high speed of 3.4 Mbit/s and are extremely energy efficient with a supply voltage starting at 1.2V,” stated Matthias Keller, COO Components at Distec. “Power consumption is very low. Therefore, power supplies, batteries in portable devices, and the corresponding peripheral circuitry can be very compact.” This saves space, weight, and cost through reduced cooling requirements and also increases lifespan due to a lower heat load on all components within the system.
Customer Benefits with I²C Interfaces:
Another advantage of I²C is that no licensing fees are required. This makes I²C ICs significantly cheaper than USB or hybrid solutions. With the right chip selection, costs can be reduced by up to 30 percent without sacrificing functionality. Additional sizes up to 24 inches can be implemented on a project basis. There are virtually no restrictions on shapes, colors, and logos, offering a complete, customized touchscreen solution. To enable professional and rapid design support for I²C hardware, Distec engineers have already prepared several implementations for various Linux kernel versions and for Android. Suitable driver binaries, configuration files, sample scripts, and adaptations to specific customer requirements can be provided quickly and efficiently.
