The “Trilogy of Magnetics” is structured as follows: “Basic Principles” – Here, the most important laws and fundamentals of inductive components, equivalent circuit diagrams, and simulation models provide the reader with an overview of the fundamental knowledge of the complex world of electronics. “Components” – This section presents inductive components with their particular properties and fields of application: EMC components, inductors, transformers, HF components, surge protection, shielding materials, and capacitors. In the “Applications” section, the reader finally finds an overview of the principles of filter circuits and numerous industrial applications, which are explained in detail through original examples.

In addition to the important fundamentals of inductive components, the revised 5th edition also covers simulation in depth. The theory from other sections is now consolidated into this chapter for better understanding. The fundamentals of filters are covered, expanded to include applications in higher frequency ranges, equivalent circuits of transformers, Ethernet and Power over Ethernet connections, the fundamentals of switched-mode power supplies and wireless power transmission, as well as basic RF elements.
“Inductive components, whether for voltage conversion, filtering, or EMC assurance, are anything but trivial and cause headaches for many developers. This widespread uncertainty and the frequent lack of a practical approach in training for the selection and use of inductive components was the reason we wrote a technical book.” “The huge success and popularity of our 'Trilogy of Magnetics' application handbook proves we were on the right track,” says author Alexander Gerfer, CTO of the Würth Elektronik eiSos Group. “We’ve expanded or added new chapters to address the growing importance of topics such as wireless power transmission, RF, energy harvesting, and the new SiC (silicon carbide) and GaN (gallium nitride) switching transistors. Information on skin and proximity effects, as well as AC losses, is also provided.”
