The losses provided by RED EXPERT are based on typical current and voltage waveforms for this type of application. In addition to core and winding losses, losses arising from specific inductor geometries, such as air gaps, are also considered.
The new RED EXPERT extension also allows for the determination of inductor losses for Buck-Boost converters in discontinuous conduction mode. Registered users can also compare all available inductors synoptically in a table and several graphs. Other new features: power inductor losses can be determined independently of the voltage converter topology.
The AC loss model in RED EXPERT operates with high accuracy for duty cycles from 0.1 to 0.9 and switching frequencies between 10 kHz and 10 MHz. A special feature is that it is not based on the well-known Steinmetz model with sinusoidal excitation, but rather on power inductor measurements derived and validated in a switched-mode converter design.
