A survey of 128,000 engineers and designers revealed that a single design engineer can lose more than 1,250 hours per year, costing the company over $100,000. Even locating something as simple as springs or bearings can take hours. (1)
Meanwhile, other professions have already adopted AI as part of their daily workflows. Developers use GPT to retrieve code in seconds, lawyers leverage AI to search for legal precedents, and 78% of organizations have integrated AI into at least one function. (2)
However, mechanical engineering still feels tied to outdated, 1990s-style processes. The global market for high-precision mechanical components for machines was $2.3 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach $3.4 billion by 2032 (3).
Furthermore, the North American industrial components market is estimated to reach $34.85 billion in 2024 (4).
Why now?
Until now, mechanical engineers lacked AI tools tailored to their field. While other professions have embraced AI, engineers have lagged behind. Now, for the first time, there's an AI model built specifically for mechanical engineers, combined with TraceParts' vast catalog.
This partnership marks a turning point: it transforms the search for components, which previously required hours of wasted effort, into minutes of smart, seamless results, and gives engineers back the time they need to focus on what they do best: creating great products.
Leo AI has developed the Large Mechanical Model (LMM), the first fundamental AI created for the mechanical field. Unlike linguistic models that process words, the LMM understands components, geometry, CAD files, physical properties, and engineering standards. Protected by two patents, the LMM can break down parts into tokens and assemble them into meaningful subassemblies, much like a linguistic model organizes words into coherent sentences. The new parts search experience: Thanks to this collaboration, Leo's AI-powered search can access TraceParts' extensive catalog alongside a company's PLM data. Instead of having to manage filters, engineers simply type: "Find me a ball bearing with a 25 mm inner diameter, a 10,000-cycle life, and a speed of 8,000 rpm." Leo's LMM interprets the request, asks clarifying questions if necessary, and retrieves results directly from internal systems or TraceParts' 1,600 catalogs. All of this is integrated into Leo's desktop application, which includes 3D visualization, supplier data, and validation tools. For engineers, this means finding the right part in minutes instead of hours, without interrupting their workflow.
Dr. Maor Farid, co-founder and CEO of Leo AI, commented: “The partnership between Leo AI and TraceParts is an exciting milestone for us and our customers, who have long awaited this groundbreaking innovation. It’s more than just a technological advancement; it’s a transformative shift in how mechanical engineers approach one of their most fundamental tasks: integrating standard parts into their designs. For the first time, they now have access to an AI tool that truly understands their unique needs, saves them countless hours, and seamlessly connects with one of the world’s largest, best-structured, and most curated parts libraries. This allows engineers to focus on what they are most passionate about: building, creating, and innovating. By combining a unique universe of mechanical parts with the first AI system designed specifically by and for mechanical engineers, this partnership represents another step toward a new era of engineering excellence.”
Gabriel Guigue, CEO and co-founder of TraceParts, states: “For over 25 years, TraceParts has been the go-to resource for millions of engineers, helping them save crucial time in new product design. By partnering with Leo AI, we are enabling their large and growing user base to seamlessly access a vast library of vendor-certified CAD models, ensuring they have accurate and up-to-date design resources. This strategic alliance with Leo AI is not just about data; it aims to fundamentally boost productivity and accelerate the future of mechanical design.”
