The BMW Group is leveraging ANSYS' extensive experience and generalized engineering simulation solutions to accelerate the development of a safety-focused solution for AD system validation.

Simulation greatly reduces the need for physical testing and will help bring safe autonomous vehicles to the roads much faster.
The multi-year agreement is driving the development of BMW Group's Level 3 (limited automation in certain areas) and Level 4-5 (monitored and fully automated automation) technologies, which offer a higher degree of automation for the highly anticipated BMW iNEXT, slated for launch in 2021. The new automated simulation toolchain will efficiently utilize the vast amount of data provided by BMW's sensors. The simulation employs intelligent data analysis and scenario creation based on statistical relevance and the sensitivity of the autonomous driving system (AD). The scenarios will include typical driving situations and extreme cases to ensure maximum test coverage. Based on these scenarios, the toolchain will conduct rigorous safety assessments of the AD systems in a high-performance virtual environment. ANSYS and BMW will support its adaptability and openness regarding relevant interfaces and validation approaches to accommodate and encourage safety initiatives.
ANSYS will assume exclusive rights to the simulation toolchain technology for commercialization in a wider market.
