Looking ahead to future needs and to meet market demands, the investment of 1.7 billion Japanese yen (13 million euros) will allow COSEL to house 100 more R&D employees, making it one of the biggest forces in power technology.

The new R&D center boasts no fewer than five EMC anechoic chambers, including one that meets the stringent three-meter requirements for radio emissions and susceptibility testing.
The center comprises five departments: Onboard Power Solutions, AC/DC Standard Units and Configurations, Intelligent Power Supplies, Customized Service for Modifications/Retrofits, and EMI Filters. With a strong focus on quality and energy efficiency, the research team is undertaking a series of projects aimed at increasing power conversion efficiency, such as broadband semiconductors (GaN, SiC), digital power control, and energy management. Close collaboration among the five departments is key to their success.

“By combining the resources and technologies of COSEL’s new R&D center in Japan with the recently acquired Powerbox, and with three R&D centers in Europe and a high level of expertise in customized power solutions for demanding applications, COSEL is positioning itself as an undisputed market leader,” says Tatsuo Yamamoto, COSEL Sales Director for the EU and the US. “From board power to highly specialized power solutions, such as high magnetic fields in NMR equipment, we have solutions to support our customers and foresee high potential from our latest research to reduce energy consumption, benefiting society as a whole.”.

For the development of products for harsh industrial environments, COSEL's R&D innovation lab includes climate chambers capable of reproducing various demanding conditions, such as salt-laden atmospheres and oil bath immersion.
The new facility has been designed using the latest energy management and conservation technologies, such as air-to-air heat exchangers, to regulate the temperatures of the buildings and test rooms. A centralized computer controls the environment and the energy distributed within the building. Even the parking lot is equipped with state-of-the-art electric vehicle charging stations. In the design and construction of its new R&D Innovation Lab, COSEL has strived not only to meet all the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 standards, but also, wherever possible, to exceed them.
