Data security is important across various sectors, and this design challenge offers element14 community members the opportunity to secure essential devices for greater protection and peace of mind. Community members are encouraged to create new projects around the concept of security or to enhance the security of an existing project. Community members can work on a wide variety of security-related projects, including:
- Integrating hardware with new or existing IoT edge devices
- Securing consumer electronics
- Innovating for safe and smart retail
- Creating robust and secure solutions for building or home automation
- Designing secure solutions for factories
- Creating better energy and renewable solutions

Community members can also build their own versions of commercially available spyware or design their own. Creators can develop spy devices using a range of tools, including Wi-Fi cameras, IP cameras, GSM microphones, body cables, GPS trackers, wiretaps, and other types of surveillance microphones.

Design challenge contestants can find inspiration by watching a recent episode of element14 Presents about a DIY Portal 2 security camera or an episode about the Raspberry Pi Cam. The grand prize for the best overall project is a spy kit package that includes an AI RF detector, a Rabbler noise generator, night-vision binoculars, and a $200 shopping cart for Newark.
