Members can use any hardware they like to design and develop a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) drone, such as a multirotor or fixed-wing drone, an FPV (first-person view) drone, an UGV (unmanned ground vehicle), a UUV (unmanned underwater vehicle), or a science fiction-inspired drone, such as a Star Wars droid or a Borg from Star Trek. The best project will win the grand prize of a $400 shopping cart* from Farnell, Newark, or element14. Three other members will each receive a $200 shopping cart*.
In honor of Arduino Day on March 27th, and to inspire members interested in participating in the competition, the element14 Community will host a live Arduino Day workshop on March 27th. The workshop, NanoDrone II: AI and Computer Vision with LoRa, will be led by element14 Community members balearicdynamics and jancumps, who will present their NanoDrone II. The NanoDrone II is an evolution of Enrico Miglino's winning project from last year's Arduino14 Day challenge, "The Nanodrone," and is a device that can be easily mounted on a semi-autonomous UAV to cover large areas of terrain, or installed on a ground-based robotic device.
Members of the element14 Community who are unable to participate in the contest, but who still wish to engage in the fun of science fiction, can immerse themselves in a series of community polls and content on key dates in the science fiction calendar, such as May 4th, Revenge of the Sixth (May 6th), and the first appearance of the Borg in Star Trek (May 8th, 1991). The contest will close on May 25th, Geek Pride Day, a very significant date for fans of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Towel Day) and Star Wars (the release date of A New Hope in 1977). The winners will be announced on June 5th, the date on which the first public flight of an unmanned hot air balloon was observed in 1783, which many consider the precursor to the drone.
