Colas and its partner Energoprojekt Niskogradnja are modernizing the line on behalf of Serbian Railway Infrastructure. The project is part of an EU program to increase the speed of passenger and freight traffic on International Rail Corridor 10, a network of lines connecting communities between the Rhine and Danube rivers.
As part of the rail line modernization, Saft will provide continuous power to equipment such as track-clearance sensors, interlocking points, level crossing barriers, and signaling systems. This equipment is essential for ensuring the safety of trains and road transport.
“The Colas Rail team selects suppliers who act as true partners and understand the importance of achieving the expected performance. Saft is a regular partner of Colas Rail, and we are confident that together we will succeed in this strategic project,” said Jean de La Chapelle, Managing and Purchasing Director of Colas Rail.
Unlike valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries, which last up to seven years and can experience sudden failure, nickel-cadmium battery systems offer high performance and reliability over a long lifespan, typically 20 years or more. They also require minimal maintenance and can withstand extreme temperatures.
“Serbian Railway Infrastructure wanted reliable backup power for the safety of train operations and, at the same time, a low total cost of ownership (TCO) to minimize the cost of rail to the community. Saft’s nickel-cadmium battery technology has proven it can achieve both, having provided more than 20 years of reliable operation in similar installations,” said Roland Knobloch, Saft’s Sales Director for Central Europe.
Saft is supplying nearly 800 batteries for the project through Goltech doo Belgrade, its local partner for industrial projects. Saft, as well as KPL nickel batteries, all manufactured in Europe at their factories in Oskarshamn, Sweden, and Raškovice, Czech Republic.
The systems to be installed in the second quarter of 2021 will provide backup power for seven signaling and control systems, six telecommunications systems, and 27 runway empty detectors.
