Enercon and Siemens will supply the wind turbines for the parks within the Canary Islands quota
Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables has awarded the contract to technology companies Enercon and Siemens for the supply of 25 wind turbines that it will install in the wind farms it is developing in the Canary Islands, which were registered in the Quota of the Ministry of Energy.
The multinational energy company was the one that achieved the largest share in this Quota, with a total of 13 facilities in Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura that add up to a power of 65 megawatts (MW).
Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables carried out a tendering process for the supply of the wind turbines and for their subsequent operation and maintenance, and awarded the work to Enercon, which will supply 16 wind turbines (37 MW) for 10 projects, and Siemens, which is responsible for nine wind turbines (28 MW) for the three remaining projects.
Several wind farms will feature different models of wind turbines, with power outputs ranging from 2 to 3.2 MW and rotor diameters between 70 and 113 meters. Some of these models have never been installed in the archipelago and incorporate the latest technologies and innovations for this type of machine, specially designed to operate in isolated electrical systems like the Canary Islands'.
Once operational, the parks will be integrated, through various computer and telecommunications systems, into the management of the Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables Energy Operation and Management Dispatch, which will allow them to be operated remotely and to apply advanced prediction models and participation in the different electricity markets, optimizing the safety of operation and the placement of all the energy they produce throughout their useful life.
Construction of the parks
Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables has already begun construction on its first five wind farms, located in the Gran Canaria municipality of Agüimes: La Vaquería, Montaña Perros, Triquivijate, Doramas, and Haría. The wind farms will generate approximately 175 direct jobs during their construction.
The projects registered by Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables represent an investment of approximately €100 million. These infrastructures will contribute to reducing emissions of pollutants in the Canary Islands by three million tons and will generate savings of €345 million in electricity production costs over the average 20-year lifespan of these types of facilities.
