The trade fair will offer visitors a comprehensive overview of the world of GaN, SiC, and other components. The VDMA's Productronic department is the conceptual and technical sponsor of the fair.
Power electronics is a core component of modern technologies and is found in power units, power supplies, and motor drives. Power semiconductors are essential, for example, for converting direct current to alternating current and vice versa. Modern power electronics therefore plays a key role in the energy and mobility transition, decarbonization, and digitalization—all central themes of productronic 2025.
New Production Facilities in Europe:
Market trends make it clear that power electronics is a component of all major technologies of the future. Markets and Markets estimate that the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for power electronics will be 5.7% through 2028, with the market size increasing from $46.2 billion in 2023 to $61 billion in 2028.
While North America previously led global power electronics production with over 30% market share, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, in particular, is poised to become the future leader of the global market with a market share of around 54%, with the largest contributions coming from China, Japan, South Korea, and India. However, Europe is also making significant strides, with well-known semiconductor manufacturers such as Infineon Technologies and Vishay currently investing in new production facilities, for example, in Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic.
GaN and SiC Gradually Increase Their Market Share.
The most important growth drivers in the field of power electronics are the so-called wideband semiconductors, gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC). Although they are currently still more expensive than conventional power semiconductors, such as silicon IGBTs or MOSFETs, they can switch much higher voltages and frequencies.
The biggest advantage of GaN and SiC is their wide band gap: 3.4 eV for GaN and 3.2 eV for SiC, compared to 1.1 eV for silicon IGBTs. This offers advantages such as efficient heat dissipation, high switching frequencies, high breakdown resistance, and low power consumption, resulting in high energy efficiency. Compared to SiC, GaN is predestined for high frequencies and is therefore often used for servers and low-power applications, while SiC has advantages over GaN at high power levels and is therefore preferred in applications such as power supply, transportation, or motor control.
Silicon IGBTs are currently even more cost-effective than broadband technologies and are notable for their fast switching speeds and high current carrying capacity. However, they are much more thermally unstable, so they will be used far less in the future than newer technologies.
Exhibitors and Exhibitions at productronica:
Power semiconductor manufacturers face the challenge of making new materials technically manageable and economically viable while meeting increasing demands for efficiency, reliability, and miniaturization. Furthermore, high investment costs, global competition for raw materials, and a shortage of skilled workers hinder rapid production scale-up.
At productronica 2025, exhibitors from the semiconductor ecosystem will demonstrate how they are addressing these challenges with a keen eye for the right technologies and an innovative spirit. F&S Bondtec, for example, will show how the company uses the right connection technology to manufacture high-quality chiplet production machines that meet miniaturization requirements. Panasonic also consistently offers the right connection with its compelling SiC package solutions. ASMPT will present leading high-volume package technologies for SiC and GaN, while Yamaha Robotics will showcase robots suitable for packaging semiconductor components.
VDMA's Special Productronic Exhibition
: The VDMA, a conceptual sponsor of productronica, will offer visitors to its "Special Exhibition" at booth B2 in hall 461 an overview of various research and development collaborations in the field of power electronics. Schweizer Elektronik, for example, will demonstrate how a Si-MOSFET improves the power unit of an inverter for a starter generator. Silicon Austria Labs will show, among other things, how a control panel for wind turbine power converters can operate much more efficiently with modern power components. Elektra Solar will also present an electrically powered aircraft at productronica.
An ideal platform for exchange:
Visitors to productronica 2025 will have the opportunity to experience firsthand the latest trends in power electronics. The world's leading trade fair for the development and production of electronics will bring together more than 1,400 exhibitors in Munich this November. True to its motto, "the pulse of innovation," visitors can delve into the world of SiC, GaN, and Si IGBTs and obtain the latest information directly from exhibitors or through a wide range of additional offerings, such as panel discussions, conferences, and networking events.
At the same time, SEMICON Europa invites visitors to explore the entire semiconductor industry value chain in Halls B1, C1, and C2.
