The device can meet this requirement with a solution that very few competitors can offer, uniquely providing 2 MHz, improved PWM dimming performance, and fault protection, thus reducing the number of external components. Furthermore, the ALT80802 can operate in buck mode up to 2 amps, driving 1-2 WLEDs from battery power or up to 12 WLEDs from a pre-charged battery.

The ALT80802 is a high-frequency switching regulator that provides a constant output current for driving high-power LEDs. It is designed to aid in EMC/EMI design through frequency interpolation, freewheeling, and well-controlled switching node rotation rates. A programmable oscillator allows the device to switch up to 2.5 MHz, outside of EMI-sensitive frequency bands such as AM. It integrates a power MOSFET for buck-buck or buck-boost conversion. The 50V-rated enable pin can be bound to Vin for auto-start, supporting battery-level PWM dimming common in legacy body controllers. The wide input range of 3.8 to 50V makes the ALT80802 highly flexible.

With current-mode control and simple external compensation, the ALT80802 achieves fast transient response. The ALT80802's control loop is designed for PWM dimming operation, achieving low dimming time, low turn-on overshoot, accurate PWM duty cycle, and a wide dimming range.
Extensive protection features include pulse-to-pulse current limiting, hiccup-mode short-circuit protection, freewheeling diode open/short protection, BOOT open/short voltage protection, undervoltage VIN lockout, and thermal shutdown.
The ALT80802 is AEC-Q100 automotive rated and is available in a small 10-pin DFN package with a thermal pad and wetted edge.
