distec-smartled-hw“Each TFT display requires unique values for optimal LED backlight performance, and each application has unique requirements,” explains Matthias Keller, Operations Manager for Components at Distec GmbH. “Therefore, until now, each TFT model needed its own special LED converter, which made purchasing and inventory costs enormous. Distec’s answer to this problem is the SmartLED series of converters.”

Universal use

Among other features, the LED current, PWM frequency, PWM settings for maximum and minimum brightness, and active LED outputs can be individually configured. These configurations can be stored and easily transferred to other SmartLED converters. This enables rapid serial production of precisely configured converters for a variety of applications. Therefore, the SmartLED converter serves as a universal foundation for customized projects with different TFT displays. SmartLED converters are available in three versions with varying input and output voltages. The SmartLED-II, for example, is suitable for explosion-proof areas, as its low voltage prevents air discharge arcing.

Wide temperature range and variable brightness

A wide operating temperature range of -30 to +70°C (80°C) allows for use in harsh environments. For operation in dark environments, the SmartLED converter dims the LED backlight to any value between 0 and 100 percent (in up to 15,000 steps). This allows for a dramatic reduction in brightness for comfortable nighttime operation, for example, on ships or trains. For TFT displays that include a compatible NVIS (Night Vision Imaging System) backlight in addition to the LED backlight, the converters provide an NVIS mode. In this mode, the display switches to the NVIS backlight as needed.

Automatic adjustment

Through an ambient light sensor, the processor can automatically adjust the backlight brightness to the ambient light conditions. This ensures a perfectly legible image at all times and saves energy, as the screen is not unnecessarily bright. A temperature sensor maintains the screen's optimal operating temperature using a fan. If the screen gets too hot, the SmartLED converter activates the fan and dims the backlight to quickly lower the temperature. With these features, the SmartLED converter can be precisely tailored to the specific needs of different projects. This high flexibility offers virtually unlimited possibilities.
