Each AT21CS11 contains a pre-programmed, unique serial number and five EEPROM memory sections. Any or all of these memory sections can be permanently locked by the end-user equipment manufacturer (EMF) to enable product tracking and accessory identification, helping to prevent counterfeiting. EEPROM is ideal for customers who need to guarantee their product, prevent counterfeiting, and ensure the continuous and correct operation of their products using genuine replacement parts.

The AT21CS11 is Microchip's second single-wire EEPROM. This new device extends the operating voltage to 4.5V, making it suitable for devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, such as disposable medical devices and e-cigarettes.

The new device connects to the system via a single input/output (SI/O) wire that provides both communication and power. The need for a single wire and ground allows fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) cabling manufacturers to add critical cable parameters to different cable types. The SI/O wire also enables the use of a simple push-in or two-point screw-in mechanical connector for disposable devices when larger three-, five-, or eight-wire solutions are not feasible.

By embedding the EEPROM in a cable or disposable cartridge, manufacturers can create easily identifiable or authenticated accessories. The device has 1 Kbit of EEPROM memory (four 256-bit sectors), a 64-bit serial number, and 128 bits of user-programmable trace memory. This extra memory allows designers to incorporate unique identification and activity parameters, such as consumption and usage information, at points remote from the main electronics.

The AT21CS11 is now available for sample and volume production in various packages. The AT21CS01/AT21CS11 single-wire evaluation kit (DM160232) is also available for $100.00.
