Kinetis MCUs are built using Freescale's 90nm thin-film storage (TFS) technology with Freescale's FlexMemory capability—configurable EEPROM read-only memory—and feature the latest low-power, high-performance, and high-precision mixed-signal capabilities. The devices are compatible with market-leading development tools from Freescale and ARM's other green system partners.
The five families in the first phase of Kinetis include a wide range of control, analog, communication, and timing peripherals, with the level of integration increasing with larger flash memory capacities and more inputs and outputs.
Common features included in all Kinetis families:
• High-speed 16-bit A/D converters.
• 12-bit A/D converters with analog reference voltage chip.
• Multiple high-speed comparators and programmable gain amplifiers.
• Low-power touch sensing devices.
• Multiple serial interfaces, including UART with ISO7816 support and Inter-IC audio.
• Powerful and flexible time counters for a wide range of applications, including motor control.
• Off-chip expansion system and data storage options via an SD host, NAND Flash and DRAM controllers, and Freescale's FlexBus interconnect system.
RS also has a wide range of development tools available that support Kinetis MCU families, including the Freescale tower system and the Kinetis KwikStik K40 development board.
The Tower System is a modular and reusable development platform that provides high prototyping capabilities. It offers multiple system expansion options, as well as excellent flexibility and value for industrial and consumer product designers. Modules can be purchased individually or as part of a complete Tower System kit.
The new KwikStik development board is a small, low-cost, all-in-one tool for evaluating, developing, and debugging Kinetis MCUs. It features low-power touch sensors, an LCD user interface, and a suite of development and runtime control software, as well as a Segge™ and L-Link™ debugging probe. It can be used independently or integrated with the Tower System.
