Existing features have been retained, such as an ARM® Cortex®-M3 core operating at speeds up to 120MHz and 32KB of flash data memory with a 100K resistor for program/erase cycles. These microcontrollers also offer various motor interface and control options, including UART, I2C, encoder, and programmable motor controller (PMD). Toshiba's M3H group of microcontrollers is well-suited for IoT and advanced functionality in a wide range of applications, such as motors, household appliances, and industrial equipment.
In the new products, the 1 MB flash code memory is implemented with two separate 512 KB areas, allowing instructions to be read and executed from one area while updated code is programmed in the other area simultaneously. Furthermore, firmware rotation is possible thanks to the area swapping function, a key advancement of these new devices (along with the increased memory capacity).
The new products from the M3H group include UART and I2C, as already mentioned, along with TSPI, a two-unit DMAC and an LCD controller to meet the demanding requirements of most industrial and consumer applications.
The new devices support a wide range of sensing applications with a high-speed, high-precision 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that allows for two types of sample-and-hold (S&H) timings to be set for each of the 21 ADC input channels. Furthermore, they are ideal for controlling AC motors and brushless DC (BLDC) motors when combined with an advanced PMD circuit that can operate in sync with the high-speed, high-precision ADC.
The built-in self-diagnostic functions for flash memory, RAM, ADC, and clock help customers achieve IEC60730 Class B functional safety certification.
Along with the microcontrollers, a new evaluation platform is available. Developed in collaboration with MikroElektronika, the CLICKER 4 board for TMPM3H, combined with the CLICKER 4 Inverter Shield, is a simple and cost-effective solution for experimenting with BLDC motor control scenarios. It is compatible with the MCU Motor Studio software available on the Toshiba website. This straightforward, well-structured, and versatile software package includes two main components: a PC-based motor control tool that allows parameter configuration, drive control, real-time logging, and diagnostics via high-speed UART, as well as a scalable and fully configurable motor control firmware for the M3H MCU.
The documentation, sample software with real-world usage examples, and driver software that controls the interfaces of each peripheral can be downloaded here.
Evaluation boards and development environments are provided in collaboration with MikroElektronika and partners in the global ARM ecosystem.
