Avocet is a wide-screen VGA sensor with a resolution of 1024 x 512 pixels. It features a high dynamic range of up to 154 dB at each frame rate with a maximum frame rate of 60 fps. This delivers impressive image quality benefits during the day, enhancing the safety provided by driver assistance systems.

Cliff De Locht, product range manager at Melexis, explains: “Under specific daytime driving conditions, such as when sunlight reflects directly off the lenses or when driving through tunnels or garages, the Avocet image sensor is able to deliver a clear image with maximum detail in all bright and dark areas of the frame simultaneously.” “The high dynamic range is also very important for surveillance cameras. For example, day/night surveillance cameras monitoring gate entrances will need excellent exposure of people’s faces both inside and outside the gate opening simultaneously. Technically speaking, this requires a high dynamic range, and the Avocet imager performs exceptionally well in these conditions.”.

Although the Avocet image sensor was originally designed for front-view automotive applications, the current demand for high-quality rear-view systems will benefit from its extended dynamic range. We are referring to the recently proposed NHTSA regulation based on the Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation Safety Act. This regulation mandates a date for the installation of rear-view cameras in vehicles sold in the United States starting in 2012.

Avocet's unique Glass-BGA package features a fully shielded optical area, protecting against contamination and moisture (Moisture Sensitivity Level - MSL1). This design potentially reduces lens focusing costs by providing exceptional X, Y, Z, and rotation accuracy.
The Avocet MLX75411 image sensor is available in monochrome, RGBG color, RGBi color, and RCCC.
