Common Materials in Printed Circuit Boards

A typical PCB consists of multiple layers, including a dielectric substrate, conductive layers, and a protective cover. The materials used for each layer must meet specific electrical, thermal, mechanical, and reliability requirements.

  1. Dielectric Substrates

The dielectric substrate is the foundation of the PCB and defines key properties such as rigidity, flexibility, and heat dissipation capacity. Common materials include:

  • FR-4 (Epoxy Fiberglass): A composite material made of woven fiberglass impregnated with epoxy resin. It is the standard in most PCBs due to its low cost, good mechanical properties, and high thermal resistance.
  • Ceramic Materials: Used in high frequency and power applications due to their low dielectric loss and excellent thermal stability.
  • Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE): Commercially known as Teflon, it is used in radio frequency (RF) and microwave applications due to its low dielectric constant and minimal losses.
  1. Conductive Materials

Copper is the most widely used conductive material in PCBs due to its excellent electrical and thermal conductivity. Copper layers can be laminated onto the substrate or chemically deposited using advanced manufacturing processes.

  1. Coating Materials

To protect PCBs from moisture, corrosion, and other environmental factors, solder mask coatings and compliant protective coatings are applied.

ShengYi: Innovation in PCB Materials

ShengYi Technology Co., Ltd. is a manufacturer of copper laminates and other PCB materials. With decades of experience, ShengYi has developed innovative solutions that meet the demands of industries such as telecommunications, automotive, aerospace, and medical devices.

ShengYi's Main Materials

PCBWay upgrades PCB material to ShengYi material

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are fundamental in the manufacture of electronic devices. The quality and functionality of a PCB depend largely on the materials used in its fabrication. Choosing the right materials for PCBs is crucial to ensuring the functionality, durability, and performance of electronic devices.

PCBWay is a leading PCB manufacturer offering a wide range of high-quality PCBs at competitive prices. They sincerely appreciate the trust and support of their customers over the years. Your satisfaction and support motivate them to continuously improve. To further enhance product quality and meet growing market demands, despite a 10% to 30% increase in production costs, PCBWay has decided to upgrade its 2-layer PCBs (area orders >=3m²)and 4-layer or larger PCBs, switching from the previously used Kingboard material to Shengyi material. Furthermore, this upgrade will be provided to customers free of charge.

Update

The base material of 2-layer PCBs (area orders >=3m2)will be automatically upgraded to S1000H TG150 material.

The original TG150 KB6165F material will be completely replaced by Shengyi's S1000H material.

The TG170 KB6167F material will also be replaced by Shengyi's S1000-2M material.

The new ShengYi material is particularly well-suited for high-tech applications requiring exceptional stability and durability, and is distinguished by its high thermal resistance. This allows PCBs to withstand extreme temperatures without compromising their integrity, a crucial feature for devices operating in demanding environments or subject to constant temperature fluctuations.

Furthermore, it also features a low dielectric constant, which reduces signal loss and improves transmission efficiency. This is essential for high-frequency applications where signal accuracy and clarity are paramount.
