In recent years, the rapid adoption of high-speed data transmission, coupled with the miniaturization of high-performance electronics, has transformed the industrial and automotive markets. As a result, system-level ESD requirements for boards and modules are becoming significantly more stringent each year. Simultaneously, advancements in functionality and smaller component sizes have inherently reduced the tolerance of integrated circuits to electrical overload (EOS) and electrostatic discharge (ESD). This has led to increased demand for external ESD protection devices that can offer both low capacitance to preserve high-speed signal integrity and low dynamic resistance to provide robust protection for sensitive integrated circuits.

In next-generation communications exceeding 10 Gbps, even marginal parasitic capacitance can severely distort signal waveforms. However, reducing parasitic capacitance invariably creates a trade-off with dynamic resistance, making it difficult to achieve high-quality communication with superior IC protection.

To meet this challenge, ROHM has developed the RESDxVx series. It is designed to support high-speed communications by reducing capacitance and dynamic resistance. For interfaces exceeding 10 Gbps, minimizing signal degradation while ensuring robust IC protection is paramount. ROHM's new diodes achieve ultra-low terminal capacitance of only 0.24 pF (bidirectional) and 0.48 pF (unidirectional). Furthermore, the series successfully overcomes the traditional capacitance-resistance tradeoff by reducing dynamic resistance to as low as 0.28 Ω. This results in a limiting voltage approximately 40% lower than conventional products, providing superior IC protection.

These features significantly improve reliability across a wide range of high-speed data communication equipment, from industrial infrastructure such as AI servers and 5G/6G base stations to consumer electronics like laptops and gaming consoles. Furthermore, the RESDxVxBASAFH and RESDxVxUASAFH integrated into the DFN10062W package are AECQ101 certified, making them ideal for demanding automotive applications such as cameras for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AD) cameras, as well as electronic control units (ECUs) using SerDes communication.

Looking ahead, ROHM will continue to strengthen its range of ESD protection diodes and low capacitance TVS diodes, while driving electronic technologies that encompass AI servers, communication infrastructures and autonomous driving systems, all with the aim of achieving a safer, more reliable and more convenient digital society.
