Achieving cutting-edge technology in space-constrained, safety-critical applications like automotive braking systems demands custom-designed sensors. The MLX90424 offers redundancy with its dual linear position sensing, while the integrated magnetic switch enables a power-saving mode. Compared to a current brake pedal module that includes separate position sensors and switches, the fully integrated MLX90424 ensures that both the position sensing and switching elements are placed together in the ideal location. This helps reduce design and packaging considerations, simplifying assembly and reducing the bill of materials (BOM) component count. Furthermore, the MLX90424 offers power flexibility, as it can be powered directly from a 12V battery without the need for a regulator.
The MLX90424 measures linear displacements up to 30 mm and utilizes Melexis' Hall Triaxis® technology for robustness against stray fields. The combination sensor is AEC-Q100 qualified, with a position-sensing function that offers system integration up to ASIL D and a switching function that supports up to ASIL B according to ISO 26262. It provides reliable, highly integrated operation for safety-critical braking actions and is resistant to stray magnetic fields up to 5 mT (4 kA/m), according to ISO 11452-8.
“As an application-specific solution, the MLX90424 is a perfect demonstration of how Melexis contributes to brake pedal sensor technology and why it is the trusted market leader,” says Klaus Wilczek, Global Marketing Director for Position Sensors at Melexis. “With this new solution, our team has developed a product that allows engineers to create simpler, more integrated designs.”
