Both sectors are characterized by distributed assets and infrastructure in harsh environments and therefore require ultra-robust embedded platforms to meet the challenge of digital transformation, which offers enormous potential for cost savings.

“The International Energy Agency estimates that digitalization can reduce production costs in the oil and gas sector by up to 20%. According to the audit and consulting firm PwC, there is significant potential for savings through more efficient maintenance and improved asset operation. There is also greater potential for savings in the supply chain through the use of artificial intelligence and embedded platforms that connect organizations with external partners,” explains Diethard Fent, Sales Partner Manager EMEA at congatec.

“By digitizing these processes, upstream and midstream companies can potentially save up to $1 trillion in capital and operating costs. To realize this potential, extremely robust embedded edge server technologies, such as those offered by congatec, are required. Our IoT and system solutions platforms, ready for solution providers, systems integrators, and end users, are based on these technologies,” says Martin Frederiksen, IT expert for oil and gas and Managing Director of Diamond Point.

To meet the requirements of the upstream and midstream oil and gas industry, the new embedded edge computing platforms are designed for extended temperature ranges, with optional conformal coating to protect against the effects of saltwater or condensation caused by large temperature fluctuations. They also offer comprehensive RAS (Reliability, Availability, Serviceability) server-type features that enable OEMs to reliably manage thousands of devices remotely. As multi-core designs with up to 6 cores and a particularly low TDP of 25 W, they are suitable for 24/7 operation without forced ventilation and therefore maintenance-free in hermetically sealed enclosures with the highest IP protection ratings. Virtual machines based on RTS hypervisor technologies enable optimal utilization of existing computing resources by distributing various tasks, including real-time local control requirements, as well as those handled via the touch Internet. Another benefit of this virtualization option is that these new platforms are also perfectly suited for building efficient universal customer premises equipment (uCPE). Such open-standard hardware is characterized by hosting telecommunications network functions within customer IT environments, including software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV).

The new ultra-robust embedded edge server platforms for the energy sector will be presented for the first time at SPE Offshore Europe in Hall 1, Stand 1AA62.
