The OrangeCrab is based on Lattice's EPC5 FPGA and features two memory configurations: ECP5 25F/128Mbit and ECP5 85F/521Mbit. The FPGA is compatible with open-source programming tools and is ideal for experimenting with RISC-V and other softcore SoCs. The variety of integrated peripherals in the OrangeCrab makes it suitable for many real-world applications.
Users can use CircuitPython on the OrangeCrab, which is capable of hosting the interpreter. Although not yet implemented, developers can work on the FPGA with HDL synthesized in the gateware. For those more familiar with SoC-level development platforms, the ECP5 can run a RISC-V softcore. The LiteX project also offers developers greater flexibility and capabilities.
Key features of the OrangeCrab r0.2 FPGA development board include:
• Processor: A Lattice Semiconductor EPC5 FPGA with 24K LUTs, a 10-pin FPGA programming connector, and a MicroSD socket with direct high-speed USB connection to the FPGA.
• Memory: Memory options include up to 8 Gbit (x16) of DDR3 system memory and 128 or 512 Mbit of QSPI Flash memory. A microSD card slot expands the development board's storage potential.
• Form Factor: The OrangeCrab follows Adafruit's slim Feather board specification, measuring only 22.86 mm x 50.8 mm. It fits in your pocket and serves as a complete prototyping platform for custom SoC designs.
• Connectivity: The open-source USB boot manager allows users to connect to the FPGA's native USB interface to load code and access memories via MSD. The standard 2 x 5 1.27 mm connector is an excellent addition for those who want to develop applications at the USB layer.
• Power: High-efficiency DC/DC converter for mains power, battery charger chip (100 mA), LiPo battery connector (PH type), and 48 MHz oscillator.
