“The new Raspberry Pi 4 Model B provides customers with a faster, more powerful, and more complete single-board computer than ever before. This model represents a significant leap forward in our ability to meet the growing demands of the Raspberry Pi market, from makers and professional design engineers to consumers looking for a desktop computer. This truly is a Raspberry Pi for everyone,” said Hari Kalyanaraman, Global Head of Single Board Computers at Farnell.
“Our research has shown widespread use of Raspberry Pi products by professional engineers in both prototyping and commercial production across a wide range of applications, from IoT, artificial intelligence, and industrial automation and control to predictive maintenance. With more memory options, true Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0, and improved processor performance, all at an attractive price, the new Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is well-positioned for adoption in industrial applications.”.
According to Eben Upton, Raspberry Pi Trading Chief Executive, the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is the most powerful Raspberry Pi to date. “The additional processing power and variety of memory options meet the needs of professional design engineers. It’s possible to process AI and machine learning data directly on the board, reducing the need to send data to the cloud and addressing real privacy concerns. Of course, the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B can also be used as a desktop computer thanks to its powerful processor, multimedia acceleration, and dual-display capability.”.
The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B computer is the first model to use a 28nm SoC, offering a significant increase in performance and energy efficiency:
• Processor: A 1.5 GHz 64-bit ARM Cortex-A72 quad-core processor enables the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B to operate up to three times faster than its predecessor.
• Video and Audio: Two micro HDMI ports support dual-display output with resolutions up to 4K.
• Connectivity:
o The new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 offers faster transfer speeds to mass storage devices (up to 5 Gbps).
o True Gigabit Ethernet connectivity delivers network data speeds of up to 1 Gbps.
o Dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless networking provides real-world data speeds exceeding 100 Mbps. Modular conformance certification allows the board to be incorporated into end-product designs with a significant reduction in conformance testing, improving both costs and time to market.
Other key features include:
• Memory: 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB LPDDR4 memory options.
• Multimedia: H.265 (4kp60) decoding, H.264 (1080p60) decoding, and H.264 (1080p30) encoding; OpenGL ES 3.0 graphics; image sensor processing.
• GPIO: Standard 40-pin GPIO connector with full backward compatibility and additional multiplexed UART, I2C, and SPI peripherals.
• SD Card: microSD card slot for loading the operating system and storing data.
• Power over Ethernet: Supports PoE via additional HAT accessories.
“Makers can unlock the potential of their projects with increased processing power and various memory options, along with the same usability and support they already know from previous versions. It’s the best Raspberry Pi computer we’ve ever created, and we’re excited to further strengthen our relationship with Farnell with this release,” Upton added.
Farnell, the manufacturer and distributor of Raspberry Pi, has promoted its use among both professional design engineers and makers through the element14 community. “We hope that the potential of the new Raspberry Pi 4 Model B computer will spark interest among both experienced Raspberry Pi users and beginners,” commented Kalyanaraman.
“As a desktop computer, the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B offers performance comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems with an exceptional video and multimedia experience and can quickly download and run 3D games. Users can purchase the basic 1GB model for $35, but will see improved performance in memory-intensive applications, such as web browsing, with the $45 2GB and $55 4GB models.”.
The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B computer will continue to be produced until at least January 2026. A new case and range of accessories, including power supplies and micro HDMI cables, will also be available alongside the Raspberry Pi 4 computer.
The Raspberry Pi 4 computer is now available at Farnell in Europe, CPC in the UK, and Newark in North America.
