The intense level of computing, communications, and sensing places a huge load on the ASR's power supply networks. The power supply must be compact and highly efficient. Cooling has a major impact on efficiency and performance. Since ASRs lack airflow and ventilation, Knightscope sought a conductive cooling solution that would utilize the robot's aluminum skin as a heat sink. They adopted a Vicor DC-DC converter module (DCM3623) for its unique ChiP (Converter housed in Package) design. It is thermally suitable and very power-dense. The DCM's power density also helps route wiring and cable assemblies, thus increasing efficiency, performance, and battery runtime. Furthermore, Vicor power modules can be connected in parallel to deliver even more power. The power modules are easily scalable and can be adapted as Knightscope innovates and enhances its ASR feature sets in future designs.
