GigaDevice, a semiconductor company specializing in Flash memory, 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs), sensors, and analog products, has joined the Zephyr project as a Silver member. Zephyr, hosted by the Linux Foundation®, brings together semiconductor manufacturers, software vendors, device manufacturers, and developers from around the world around an open and flexible operating system for embedded applications.
Zephyr is an open-source RTOS designed to provide a common, modular, and scalable platform for embedded device development. In addition to providing the functions of a real-time operating system, such as task management, interrupts, timers, and inter-process communication, Zephyr integrates a wide range of components and services to facilitate the development of connected products, including hardware drivers, connectivity, Bluetooth®, IP networking, USB, file systems, power management, and security mechanisms. One of Zephyr's key advantages is precisely its integrated, cross-platform ecosystem approach.
The addition of GigaDevice will allow for closer integration between its wide range of GD32 microcontrollers and the Zephyr ecosystem, offering developers new software options and tools for industrial, IoT, home automation, consumer electronics and other applications.
Adapting GD32 MCUs to Zephyr:
GigaDevice has been working on adapting its GD32 microcontrollers to Zephyr for some time. Its engineering team has already completed SoC, BSP, driver, and development board support for several MCU families, the code for which is available in GigaDevice's GitHub repositories.
In addition to developing this support, GigaDevice actively contributes to the project through code contributions and technical support to the community. This integration provides developers with access to a more open and flexible development environment, while also allowing them to leverage the capabilities of GD32 MCUs within a widely adopted software ecosystem.
A Step Forward in the Open Ecosystem Strategy:
Joining the Zephyr project and the Linux Foundation represents a further step in GigaDevice's strategy to expand and strengthen its software ecosystem.
In the coming months, the company will continue adapting new GD32 MCU families and working to incorporate this support into the Zephyr mainline repository. The goal is to broaden the options available to developers and facilitate the creation of GD32-based embedded applications. GigaDevice will also collaborate with other members of the Zephyr community and industry partners to contribute to the development of its infrastructure and continue connecting GD32 MCUs with leading open-source software ecosystems.
With this initiative, GigaDevice reinforces its commitment to a development model based on open collaboration, providing customers and developers with an increasingly comprehensive environment for developing embedded solutions.
