tram-train-sheffield-wSaft MRX's nickel-based battery systems will help train-tram services run on time, providing vital backup power for critical safety and control systems, including emergency braking, especially if there is a disruption in the main power supply of overhead catenary lines.

A key factor in winning this contract was the exceptional track record of Saft STH's nickel-based batteries, installed on Sheffield's Supertrams which began service in 1994. In fact, ongoing testing recently carried out on the sample battery set showed that, even after around 19 years of operation, they remained in perfect condition in terms of potential and discharge capacity.

The South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) has ordered seven tram-trains from Vossloh Spain, a leading European manufacturer in the rail industry, for services between Sheffield city center and the neighboring town of Rotherham. The dual-voltage (750 V DC and 25 kV AC) tram-trains will operate on both Sheffield's Supertrams network and the rail network, becoming the first of their kind to run on both tram and rail networks in the UK. The new service will serve as a pilot project for tram-trains to assess their viability in other cities across England.

The Sheffield project reflects the current interest in the modern concept of tram-trains, pioneered along with the Karlsruhe model in Germany. Tram-trains have already been implemented on 16 routes worldwide, and around 30 more stages are planned.

“The MRX design has been specially developed for the new generation of modern metro and light rail services, offering the ideal combination of smooth operation, reliability, and low maintenance in a compact and lightweight package. This makes it the best choice for Sheffield’s new tram-trains,” says Ignacio Quiles, Managing Director of Saft Batteries in Spain and South America. “The success of the MRX batteries in the first test program of the Karlsruhe tram-trains has been a very important factor.”.

Saft's MRX Train Batteries:
Three battery systems will be installed on board each carriage of Sheffield's tram-trains. Two 130 Ah batteries will provide 90 minutes of backup power for critical functions such as lighting, door opening, communications, and pantograph lifting. They will also support the electromagnets that activate the brakes in an emergency. The third 70 Ah battery will provide additional backup power for onboard functions.

Saft's MRX batteries are the ideal choice for these types of light rail applications, offering maximum performance, reliability, and a low total cost of ownership (TCO). They also stand out for their low maintenance characteristics and long service life thanks to sintered/PBE technology. This compact and lightweight battery pack reduces volume by more than 30% compared to conventional batteries.

The MRX design is extremely reliable and does not suffer from the 'sudden death' that can affect some batteries, even in extreme temperatures ranging from -30°C to +70°C. Another advantage is its centralized water system, which simplifies refilling, reducing operator maintenance and costs.

Saft has developed the battery system for Sheffield's tram-trains to meet Vossloh Spain's specific size and weight requirements, as well as all applicable rail industry standards. Delivery of the 21 systems began in late 2014 and will continue until December 2015.
