“Selecting the optimal battery is one of the most crucial factors for the success of an IoT project. However, our conversations with developers have indicated that battery selection is often left until a later stage of the project. This could lead to selecting a battery that has to fit within a predetermined installation space and may not fully meet the end user's expectations,” says Cécile Joannin, IoT Market Manager at Saft. “Our new online tool is designed to eliminate that risk as soon as the project begins. Now developers can rely on Saft's expertise in IoT applications to select the best battery at the start of their project.”
Selecting the right battery for an IoT project isn't just about meeting performance requirements in terms of voltage, continuous current, and peak current. The device must also meet its total cost of ownership (TCO) target. Therefore, the battery must deliver its performance under specified operating conditions, such as extreme temperatures, and throughout the device's expected lifespan. By using the new online tool, developers can find the batteries that best suit their application.
The recommendations provided by the online tool are based on statistics, historical data, and experience from millions of real-world field applications of Saft's two main lithium battery chemistries used in IoT devices: lithium-manganese dioxide (Li-MnO2 ranges - LM/M) and lithium-thionyl chloride (Li-SOCl2 - LS, LSH, and LSP ranges).
Once a recommendation is received, application parameters such as data transmission frequency, expected lifespan, and communication protocol can be edited to see in real time how they influence battery selection.
While the online tool is specifically designed to help developers explore their options at an early stage of the project, Saft application engineers are available to provide guidance at any stage of the design process. This includes recommending a customized battery solution and accurately calculating the lifespan of any IoT device.
