The main innovation is the new generation of Huawei string inverters, led by the SUN2000-506KTL-H1 model. This utility-scale inverter significantly increases power output compared to previous generations, while maintaining the advantages of string architecture over traditional centralized solutions.
The new Huawei inverter incorporates a 1000Vac output architecture, compared to the more common 800Vac used until now. This technology allows for lower currents for the same power output, reducing electrical losses, optimizing photovoltaic plant design, and improving overall energy efficiency.
Furthermore, the new FusionSolar platform integrates improvements in power density and thermal management through an innovative evaporative cooling system. This solution improves heat dissipation and increases equipment reliability, even under demanding environmental conditions.
The combination of higher power per inverter and the 1000Vac architecture allows for reduced electrical infrastructure, optimized cabling, and improved energy performance of the installation. All of this contributes to lowering the LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy) and increasing the competitiveness of utility-scale solar plants.
Huawei notes that this technological evolution has been made possible by its own development of power electronics and new devices designed for high-energy-density architectures. The company already has gigawatt-scale references in international projects, enhancing its bankability and reducing technological risks in future European projects.
Grid-forming capabilities for more stable power grids.
Another key innovation is the integration of advanced grid-forming (GFM) functionalities in utility-scale string inverters. Thanks to intelligent control algorithms, these inverters can actively contribute to grid stability through autonomous voltage and frequency regulation.
These capabilities improve the operation of renewable energy plants in weak grids or those with high renewable energy penetration, aligning with the evolution of future European grid codes and new energy integration requirements.
According to Jesús Heras, Technical Director Southwest Europe at Wattkraft, “new utility-scale plants must be designed considering future grid stability requirements and grid-forming capabilities. This architecture improves efficiency and LCOE, as well as preparing the facilities for advanced integration with future grid codes.”
Smart Transformer Station for Utility-Scale Plants:
The new architecture is complemented by an advanced generation of Smart Transformer Stations (STS), available in configurations up to 11 MVA within the same 20-foot container previously used for lower-power solutions.
The STS range includes 3 MVA, 7 MVA, and 11 MVA models, with medium-voltage output configurations of 15, 20, 25, and 30 kV. This plug-and-play approach simplifies both the design and installation of large-scale photovoltaic plants.
Huawei also plans to expand this architecture with future 1000Vac PCS solutions for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) applications, facilitating hybrid configurations with the SUN2000-506KTL-H1 inverters.

photovoltaic solutions and BESS systems
The company has experience integrating photovoltaic systems and BESS solutions for utility-scale, industrial, and commercial applications, bringing these technological innovations to life with a focus on efficiency, availability, and profitability.
“Each plant has specific needs. Our goal is to adapt these technologies to each project to maximize performance and profitability, avoiding standardized solutions that do not meet the real needs of each facility,” concludes Jesús Heras.
