ServeisWeb's customers rely on the company's resources and services for their internet and IP network solutions, including housing, hosting, domains, virtual servers, cloud services, and dedicated servers for their critical data needs. Any power outage could trigger a server restart and, consequently, significant data loss.
When ServeisWeb opened its current facilities in 2008, two Eaton 9390 80kVA UPS units were supplied, operating in redundant parallel configuration. Currently, following the company's continued growth and success, its facilities have been expanded to 1200m², including a large data center with two large 450m² rooms housing the company's internet and network equipment. This expansion has also led to a growth in its client base and an increase in the range of services offered. To provide the expected level of efficient service at this scale, ServeisWeb decided to eliminate the existing redundancy by increasing its power capacity, which led to the installation of two new Eaton 9390 80kVA UPS units.
The project, which lasted approximately four months, required relocating equipment and cabling to improve the installation, layout, and aesthetics. Part of this involved doubling the number of UPS units from two to four, with the biggest challenge being completing the installation without interrupting service to customers during the four-month period. This expansion phase was carried out by ServeisWeb's own Installations Department, with all technical support provided by Eaton. The UPS units were configured in redundant parallel operation to eliminate any power outages that could negatively impact ServeisWeb's customers.
Antonio Martínez Jiménez, Director of the Infrastructure Department at ServeisWeb, commented: “From the outset, the challenge has been to ensure that the new UPS systems operate in parallel with the existing ones without experiencing what is electrically known as a “zero” state. For this reason, numerous meetings were necessary with all parties involved in the project to properly integrate the units.”
Eaton UPS systems utilize IGBT technology to efficiently handle nonlinear loads. This technology provides a THDi (Total Harmonic Distortion at input) of less than 5%. This is a key feature because lower THDi prevents excessive current distortion and coupling that can affect other connected equipment in the building.
In addition, Eaton's patented Advanced Battery Management (ABM) technology utilizes sophisticated sensing circuitry and an innovative three-stage charging technique that extends UPS battery life by up to 50% while optimizing recharge time. The UPS's intelligent battery management technology monitors battery health and provides alerts when it detects a low battery. This optimizes the charging routine by preventing unnecessary and excessive battery charging, thus avoiding battery degradation. This is particularly useful when consecutive power outages may occur within a short period.
The UPS systems installed at ServeisWeb's facilities also utilize Eaton's patented load-sharing technology, Hot Sync and Pull Chain, which ensures maximum availability and reliability by eliminating any single point of failure in a parallel UPS system where two or more units share the same load. A parallel UPS system can be used to provide continuous, conditioned, and reliable power to the load, which was essential in this project to protect ServeisWeb's service level. If one unit fails, the others take over, the affected unit is isolated, and power continues to be supplied without interruption.
A redesign of the electrical panel was required to accommodate the additional UPS units. According to Martínez: “Ultimately, the decision was made to create a new electrical panel to allow all the transformers on the secondary circuit (NETWORK 2) to be connected in parallel. This reduced the power difference between them, and thus, through the external bypass, all the units could be connected.”.
“Despite being an extremely complex installation, all four units are now fully operational with the four RED2 transformers. This was made possible thanks to the hard work of both our Infrastructure Department and the Eaton team. We will rely on Eaton for future projects,” he concludes.
