Developers can now create Linux-based embedded designs using SmartFusion mixed-signal intelligent FPGAs. With the continued expansion of its ecosystem, Actel is making it easier for embedded system designers to adopt SmartFusion devices.

“Our ability to offer a Linux-compliant OS opens the door to a whole new segment of SmartFusion designers,” says Wendy Lockhart, Head of Marketing and Training for Design Solutions at Actel. “These designers can now access not only a Linux operating system but an OS with modular memory, allowing them to further reduce the memory footprint.”

TheUnisonLinux1p SOUnison consists of a set of modular software components that, like Linux, are either free or licensed. Full Linux implementations require a CPU with a memory management unit (MMU), while embedded Linux does not require an MMU but does require more memory space. Unison offers POSIX and Linux compatibility with real-time hardware performance, comprehensive I/O modules, a small memory footprint, and an easy-to-understand environment for programming device drivers. It integrates seamlessly with FPGAs, and its analog functions are fast and simple. Unison comes with over 30 demo programs that can be run externally in 10 minutes using SoftConsole.

All versions of Unison have been rigorously tested with standardized POSIX test suites as well as additional testing, development, and management techniques, resulting in the most reliable, standards-based, ultra-thin operating system available.
