Capable of supporting up to 100W of charging power (from 5V/0.1A to 20V/5.0A), USB Type-C merges and supports the functionality of the previous Type-A and Type-B ports into a single port and is even capable of switching between types on the fly.

The USB Type-C development kit offers:

1) A solution with embedded protection against short circuits, overvoltages, overloads and electromagnetic interference by using USB Type-C connectors, inductive components and capacitors and certified ST USB power supply controllers with integrated protection.

2) A complete, ready-to-use solution with evaluation boards and a demo board for heat dissipation and power supply applications from 0.5W to 100W. These boards can be used without any additional software or firmware to accelerate the development phase.

The USB Type-C development kit consists of three assembled boards and a high-current USB Type-C cable.

The first board is the 40W power supply evaluation board with the STUSB4710 auto-drive and integrated ST DC/DC converter. The STUSB4710 incorporates all the necessary high-voltage digital and analog circuitry to autonomously support full USB PD negotiation. It supports up to 5 Power Data Objects (PDOs) and power distribution applications via its I²C interface. Common applications include power supplies such as AC adapters, power supplies, power hubs, smart plugs, and DC/DC applications.

The second board is the 100W evaluation board with the STUSB4710 automatic controller. This board allows for easy migration from STD-B, micro-B, or custom power pins to a USB Type-C connector. This solution is ideal for automatically initiating a charging process, even with a discharged battery. The STUSB4500 supports up to 3 ODPs. Common applications include electronic devices that charge via a USB Type-C connector.

The third board is a demo board designed as a 100W power supply, featuring the STUSB1602—an analog front-end (AFE) chip that accompanies the STM32 microcontroller—and an integrated DC/DC converter. The STUSB1602 supplies up to 5 ODP. Common applications include power supplies such as AC adapters, power supplies, power hubs, smart plugs, and DC/DC converters.
