In recent years, the demand for greater energy efficiency in equipment has grown in response to global electricity supply constraints, as motor drives account for up to 50% of total global energy demand. For this reason, high-efficiency MOSFETs are increasingly used in inverter circuits that convert energy to drive motors. At the same time, the measures needed to counteract the noise generated by MOSFET operation generally involve adding components and/or changing circuit layouts, thus requiring reductions in both labor hours and costs. However, the reduction in power loss and noise is usually a trade-off, making it difficult to achieve both objectives.
To meet these needs, in 2012 ROHM began mass production of the PrestoMOS™ range of superjunction MOSFETs, which feature the industry's fastest reverse recovery time (trr) and have been very well received for their lower power consumption. The range now includes three new models that deliver best-in-class noise characteristics while maintaining the fast trr thanks to an optimized design.
The new R60xxRNx series maintains PrestoMOS™'s high-speed trr characteristics while minimizing noise. It achieves an industry-leading trr of 40 ns, improving upon conventional lifetime control technology and reducing switching losses by approximately 30% compared to general-purpose products, resulting in lower power loss in the application. Simultaneously, the novel super-junction structure reduces noise characteristics (which are inversely related to a faster trr) by about 15 dB compared to standard products (under ROHM measurement conditions at 40 MHz). These industry-leading features reduce the number of labor hours and parts required to mitigate noise.
In the future, ROHM will continue to expand its range of high-voltage MOSFETs in various packages and with even lower on-resistances that contribute to environmental protection by reducing energy consumption in a wide variety of applications.

PrestoMOS™ is ROHM’s original power MOSFET that maintains the high non-disruptive voltage and low on-resistance of superjunction MOSFETs while accelerating the turnaround time (TRR) of the built-in diode. By reducing switching losses, it is ideal for a wider range of inverter circuit applications, such as air conditioners and refrigerators.
