PLCs accept either downstream logic input, primarily used in Japan, or upstream logic input, primarily used outside of Japan. With globalization, bridge circuits are increasingly being used as upstream components of photocouplers, which serve as input interfaces in PLCs to provide support for both downstream and upstream logic. Newer photocouplers, the buffer-type "TLP2395" and the inverter-type "TLP2398," support both downstream and upstream logic by connecting two LEDs in inverse parallel, thus eliminating the need for bridge circuits. Since there are instances where a single panel will contain multiple bridge circuits, the use of these new photocouplers can lead to reductions in circuit size, power consumption, and cost.
