The 10BASE-T1S LAN867x physical layer family, a new solution from Microchip Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MCHP) now available, enhances Ethernet connectivity right up to the edge of industrial networks, simplifying architectures and reducing risk for designers.
The LAN867x Ethernet physical layer transceivers are high-performance, space-saving devices that enable connections to standard system devices such as sensors and actuators that previously required their own communication systems.
With LAN867x devices, all-Ethernet infrastructures in OT and IT systems can be extended to the network's edge. Microchip's LAN867x devices eliminate the gateways previously required to interconnect incompatible communication systems. The single pair of wires reduces costs, while the multidrop bus architecture decreases the need for expensive switches and improves scalability. Multiple nodes can operate on the same bus line with high data rates.
Microchip's LAN8670, LAN8671, and LAN8672 Ethernet physical layers are the first on the market designed and validated according to the new IEEE 10BASE-T1S standard for single-pair Ethernet. 10BASE-T1S facilitates the creation of all-Ethernet architectures for industrial applications such as process control, building automation, and system consolidation with multiple interconnecting systems.
The configuration allows for a multidrop topology (bus line) with fewer cables and development on printed circuit boards with a minimum of eight nodes and a minimum distance of 25 meters.
Infrastructures built entirely on Ethernet simplify architectures because they utilize well-established communication and security mechanisms. This reduces both cost and risk when designing new systems. Other advantages of Ethernet include the use of the same protocol regardless of the physical layer speed and its ability to operate within infrastructures and ecosystems with robust security.
