In recent years, we have witnessed a transition to higher voltages, moving from conventional 12V/24V systems to 48V systems in communication base stations and industrial equipment, with the aim of achieving greater efficiency by reducing current values. In these situations, switching MOSFETs require a non-disruptive voltage of 100V to compensate for voltage fluctuations, as 48V power supplies are also used in fan motors to cool these applications. However, the increased breakdown voltage raises the on-resistance (RDS(on)) (which maintains a compensation ratio), leading to decreased efficiency and making it difficult to achieve both a lower RDS(on) and a higher breakdown voltage. Furthermore, unlike the multiple single-drive MOSFETs typically used in fan motors, dual MOSFETs, which integrate two chips into a single package to save space, are increasingly being adopted.
In response, ROHM has developed two new series, the HP8KEx/HT8KEx (Nch+Nch) and the HP8MEx (Nch+Pch), which combine Nch and Pch MOSFET chips using state-of-the-art manufacturing processes. Both series achieve the lowest RDS(on) in the industry thanks to the adoption of new back-dissipation packages with excellent thermal dissipation characteristics. As a result, the RDS(on) is reduced by up to 56% compared to standard dual MOSFETs (19.6 mΩ for the HSOP8 and 57.0 mΩ for the HSMT8 Nch+Nch), which contributes to significantly lower power consumption. At the same time, combining two chips in a single package saves even more space by considerably reducing the footprint. For example, replacing two single-chip TO-252 MOSFETs with one HSOP8 reduces the space requirement by 77%.
ROHM will soon continue to expand its range of dual MOSFETs to withstand the voltages required for industrial equipment, while also developing low-noise variants. This is expected to contribute to addressing societal challenges such as environmental protection by saving space and reducing energy consumption in various applications.
