On the other hand, new car buyers expect features such as smartphone and media integration. Optical proximity and gesture detection enable a more intuitive HMI experience. The main challenges such systems face are cost constraints, sunlight resistance, electromagnetic interference, and mechanical integration, all while supporting multiple OEM configurations. The MLX75030 and MLX75031 ICs for optical gesture and proximity detection address these challenges thanks to Melexis' integrated ambient light suppression, electromagnetic compliance, small size, and flexible system architecture.

The MLX75030 and MLX75031 incorporate two simultaneously operating light measurement channels that can detect active optical reflection from the lens. Melexis' integrated ambient light suppression makes these channels highly tolerant of backlight interference. There are two additional channels for measuring ambient light.

At the system level, the MLX75030 and MLX75031 should be complemented with one or two LEDs and photodiodes of any type for active light detection. The MLX75030 allows control of the LEDs via external switches with a peak current of 1 A, while the MLX75031 integrates the LED drivers to minimize the number of external components. Ambient light can be detected with up to two independent photodiodes. Any number of detection channels can be added via multiplexing. Internal control logic, configurable user registers, and SPI communication enable intuitive and programmable operation. Additional circuit functions, such as a supervisory timer, temperature sensor, and self-diagnostics, facilitate a robust product design.

The digital output of the MLX75030 and MLX75031 ICs contains the active and ambient light measurement levels, which should be processed by the customer's microcontroller to detect gestures such as swiping, zooming, or panning. The measurement rate of up to 700 Hz per channel speeds up interface response times.

The MLX75030 and MLX75031 ICs are supplied in a compact (4 mm x 4 mm), 24-pin QFN package for surface mounting. Both devices are AEC-Q100 approved for an operating temperature range of -40°C to 105°C.
