With the transition from 400-volt architectures to 800-volt and higher, the demands on switching components continue to increase. High-voltage relays must safely manage extreme currents, ensure safe disconnection in the event of a fault, and operate reliably under mechanical stress. Gruner addresses these challenges with a new generation of relay types specifically designed for use in electric vehicles.

Currently under development or in the prototyping phase are the 860 series bank relay, the 870 and 880 series main relays, and an 890 series load relay. All designs combine compact dimensions with high robustness and performance. A key feature is arc extinction in a sealed chamber.

Type 870 relay for 450V systems

The Type 870 is designed as a main relay for modern 450-volt vehicle architectures. It offers reliable switching performance even under demanding automotive conditions. The relay can handle continuous currents of 100 A and withstand short-duration currents of over 6,000 A for five milliseconds. Its compact design and low holding power contribute to overall system efficiency. Furthermore, it offers high shock resistance.

Gruner 880 Design 2 relay

Type 880 relay for 800 V platforms

For next-generation 800-volt systems, Gruner introduces the Type 880. Thanks to its high current-carrying capacity, the relay enables safe and efficient power management in high-performance 800V vehicle platforms. It supports continuous currents up to 500 A and withstands short-duration currents exceeding 22,000 A for five milliseconds. The switching voltage reaches up to 1,000 V DC. With a shock resistance of up to 60 g, the relay is designed for harsh operating environments.

Gruner 880 Design 4 relay

Type 890 Relay for Charging Applications.
The Type 890 features a short-circuit current carrying capacity of up to 27 kA and a contact resistance of less than 90 µOhm, ensuring minimal power loss and high efficiency. The high short-circuit current carrying capacity is achieved through optimized current conduction within the relays. The monostable version is optimized for low-power operation with a holding power of less than 2 W. These characteristics make the relay an ideal solution for advanced electric vehicle charging architectures. Engineering Expertise for Reliable Performance. Gruner relies on extensive simulation capabilities across multiple physical domains when developing its relays. This includes detailed arc simulation and optimization of the switching chamber design. The result is a robust relay architecture with high short-circuit current carrying capacity, high shock resistance, and high continuous current capacity. The relays are available in monostable and bistable versions and comply with the relevant international standards IEC 61810-1 and IEC 60664.
