switch-wAll of this is housed in a compact, low-profile package. Its key feature is its non-volatile memory. Thanks to this integrated EEPROM, OEMs using the MLX92242 can perform end-of-line (EOL) programming, allowing them to cancel all mechanical tolerances within the application.

The programmable memory allows for the definition of various tolerances for a given application (via the device's VDD pin) and, if necessary, is readjusted before locking at the end. The range and resolution of the programmable magnetic thresholds and thermal sensitivity coefficients allow the sensor to work in conjunction with a magnet, facilitating the implementation of a proximity sensing system with ferrous metal. The MLX92242's temperature compensation programmability means it can be used with all types of magnets (including low-cost ferrite materials). The resulting low-iron, cost-effective proximity switch conveniently serves numerous position limiting, proximity sensing, and encoding applications.

What sets the MLX92242 apart from other devices of this type is its two-wire implementation, instead of the usual three-wire configuration. It only requires the VDD and GND pins to provide all the diagnostic capabilities needed to detect malfunctions. This significantly reduces the amount of wire required, allowing for installation in confined spaces and lowering the overall weight in applications where weight might otherwise be a concern. The 2.7V to 24V voltage range maximizes design flexibility.

The MLX92242 is primarily targeted at automotive applications, such as seatbelt lock detectors, seat position sensors, power window regulators, and more. It can also be deployed in remote applications where there is some distance to the electronic control unit. Numerous industrial and security applications can also benefit from its capabilities. The advanced proprietary offset cancellation system integrated into the magnetic core enables faster and more accurate processing of data acquired from the sensing element, while also providing responsiveness to temperature fluctuations and other stresses inherent in automotive and industrial environments. The device exhibits high responsiveness to electrostatic discharge (ESD), complies with the 8kV ESD standard for the human body, and features a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to 150°C. It incorporates reverse voltage protection and undervoltage lockout mechanisms. It is supplied in a 3-pin TO-92-Flat package for push-in mounting or a 3-pin TSOT package for surface mounting.
