The Allegro A4964 is designed for the automotive market, with target applications including engine cooling fans and oil and water pumps. It is designed to provide motor control functions within a single system, where a small microcontroller provides the communication interface. The A4964 supplies power and monitoring for the microcontroller and high-voltage interfaces between the microcontroller and the engine control unit (ECU) and ignition switch. It can also function as a standalone, single-chip remote motor controller.
The motor is controlled by a three-phase sinusoidal current drive, where phase switching is predetermined, eliminating the need for separate position sensors and monitoring the motor's back EMF (bemf). The sensorless starting scheme includes forward and reverse windmill detection and timing, enabling the device to operate over a wide range of motor and load combinations.
The A4964 offers three control modes: open-loop (voltage) control, current (torque limiting) control, and closed-loop speed control, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. The control mode, operating mode, and bridge parameters are programmed via an SPI-compatible serial interface. A single current-sense amplifier provides peak current limiting and average current measurement through the serial interface. Integrated diagnostics provide indication of undervoltage, overtemperature, and power bridge faults and can protect power switches under most short-circuit conditions.
The A4964 is available in both a 36-pin QFN package and a 32-pin QFP package, both with exposed heat sinks for increased power dissipation.
